義大焦點 IN FOCUS Week 6

01I-Shou in Action for Ukraine

Dear parents,

It is certainly a busy time of year across school departments and grade levels at I-Shou!

We have recently completed a highly successful "Week Without Walls" program, our IBDP seniors have completed their mock exams and been treated to a fabulous barbeque by teachers, and our classrooms are filled with meaningful instructional activities as we approach the final three months of school.

In response to the humanitarian crisis and devastation in Ukraine, as with hundreds of other international schools throughout the globe, I-Shou has undertaken a fundraising effort along with various actions and events scheduled to increase awareness of the need to provide assistance to the people of Ukraine.

Funds raised by our school community will be forwarded to the Disaster Relief Foundations Ukrainian Relief Fund as organized by the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

We are grateful to Director Tim and his I-Shou in Action for Ukraine committee consisting of Trs. Barry, Ryan, Will, Rachel, Jaime, Johan, Claire and Kurt for their collaborative efforts in the organization of this event.  We also thank our faculty for their creative and meaningful presentations and activities with students to raise awareness about what is happening in Ukraine.

Donation forms have been sent to parents on March 21 and the deadline for participation is Thursday, March 31.

We encourage you to participate in this charity event as members of our caring and internationally minded school community at I-Shou!

With thanks,

Superintendent

Dr. Peter Nanos

02Primary Department - World Maths Day!

This Wednesday was World Maths Day! Students from around the world had fun competing in a global online maths challenge. I-Shou Primary Department students participated in some fierce competition to represent Taiwan and flex their amazing math muscles! Students got one point for each correct answer and those with the most points rose to the top! After results are in, students will have the opportunity to receive certificates, win prizes, and even get placed in the World Maths Day Hall of Fame. Our I-Shou Matheletes gave a valiant effort to prove to the world that I-Shou students are awesome!

03Middle School Students Highly Engaged in Vex Robotics

Recently I-Shou International School has introduced Vex Robotics to our students, with multiple Middle School students joining the activity.  Vex is considered more challenging than LEGO Robotics and is a natural pathway into careers such as programming, engineering, and others, etc.  The goal is to build a team that is able to compete successfully at the national and international levels at Vex competitions in the near future.

04A Week of Exams, Workshops and a Surprise Barbecue in the International Secondary Department (ISD)

At the beginning of the week, we reflected on the many successes of the Week Without Walls while the Grade 12 continued and finished their mock exams. Grade 11s took part in an Extended Essay (EE) workshop that focussed on how to research effectively, and the boys Varsity Volleyball team began their season. Importantly, we also started our “I-Shou for Action for Ukraine” charity drive in order to raise as much money and awareness. Many other exciting actions are planned for the week ahead!

On Wednesday once their exams had finished, the IB Diploma teachers decided to plan a surprise barbecue for the Grade 12 students. It was an important opportunity for the teachers to offer their congratulations for all that they have achieved so far and a good opportunity for the students to unwind a little bit and enjoy each other's company. The students loved what was planned, and were particularly excited and appreciative that the teachers did the cooking!

Reflecting on this week it is clear that the ISD is a great learning community that embodies the spirit of the IB Learner profile and the school’s own Mission and Guiding Statements.

05Secondary Bilingual Department Star Plan

The Ministry of Education (MOE) Star Plan allows schools to cultivate students in diverse ways and provides multiple entrance pathways that can be appropriate for each student. Through MOE’s program, I-Shou International School maintains the focus on our vision “Make the World a Better Place, One Student at a Time.”

The Star Plan is one of the pathways that we wish to maintain every year. In addition to the assistance provided by Tr.Mandy, our Principal also shares his experience and discusses options with every Grade 12 student to best help them to enter their ideal universities.

Thanks for Principal Lee, Tr. Mandy and Tr. Andy’s suggestions!

06Vex IQ Competitive Robotics

Our Vex IQ club is really moving!

They are starting to tackle engineering challenges using their skills. This week they created structures and a program to sense, hold, move, and release simple objects!

Check out their progress in these photos!
