義大焦點 IN FOCUS WEEK 2

01Primary Department - International Pen Pals

Students in Grade 2 were very excited to receive letters from their international pen pals in Canada. As a way to interact with other language students in North America, they use English to write and receive letters with Canadian primary school peers. Our students were excited to come back from Winter Break to letters from their friends on the other side of the world! They’ve enjoyed reading them, and will soon begin drafting letters to send back. Through this meaningful exchange, they build upon their ATL skills and develop a deeper sense of international-mindedness.

02Middle School Department - Humanities

High-quality and effective teaching and learning is clearly visible across all subject areas in the Middle School Department (MSD).

This week in Individuals & Societies class, Grade 6 students learned about some of the most ancient and influential societies, asking the thought-provoking question ‘Why did the first major civilizations begin in river valleys?’

Humanities play an integral role in our holistic curriculum and promote the attitudes and values associated with international-mindedness which is at the core of what it means to be an IB student at our renowned international school.

03International Secondary Department - University Admissions

We would like to celebrate some of the wonderful offers that our students have received from prestigious colleges and universities around the world. While we are still early in the process (as most colleges and universities do not finalize their placements until March) our students are already holding some wonderful offers. These include:

USA & Canada: Berklee College of Music, Ohio State, Penn State, University of Toronto, University of Minnesota, University of Mississippi, Michigan State, UMASS Boston & UMASS Amherst

UK: Newcastle University, Nottingham University, University of Bristol, Birmingham University, University of Sheffield, Goldsmiths University

Elsewhere: University of Melbourne, University of Sydney, Monash, University of Auckland, Lancaster University at Leipzig,

Further good news is that of the ISD students currently holding offers, 17% of them have also secured scholarships as part of those offers. As stated, this is just the beginning and we hope to share further good news on this in the future.

04Secondary Bilingual Department (SBD) Grade 9 Mock Exam

“I am a slow walker, but I never walk backward.”- said Abraham Lincoln, the former president of the United States. All Secondary Bilingual Department (SBD) grade 9 students are practicing and working carefully through preparations and Mock exams. Students know that in situations like these there is great value in thoughtful and diligent work.

All students take every opportunity to use the reflective skills which we actively teach in our classes. After the mock exam, students may review their work and teachers will support students in identifying areas of strength and growth.

Let’s cheer for our grade 9 students!

05Vex IQ Activity Begins

This week we received the first batch of Vex Robotics and were able to launch two Competitive Robotics Team activities. Students in grades 6-8 will be building and driving IQ robots, while our grade 9-12 students are using the V5 system. Students work with their teammates and coaches to solve a variety of challenges. Eventually, we will take our robots and skills on the road to compete against other teams nationwide.
