義大焦點 IN FOCUS WEEK 12

01The Floor is Lava Championship

Last week the preschool hosted the first ever Floor is Lava Championship. Students needed to use their balance and athleticism to navigate an obstacle course which increased in difficulties as they progressed. If students touched the ground as they attempted to move to the next obstacle, they were eliminated from the competition. Students across all grade levels completed the course and only two students in the whole school successfully made it to the end.

While this activity was very fun for students, it was also a good opportunity to develop essential learner profile traits like taking risks, and being principled. Students needed to take risks and be brave as they jumped from object to object. For many students this was very challenging as they often fear failing. Students were rewarded for being principled as when a teacher noticed their foot touched the ground, they were given a chance to announce they had failed before the teacher instructed them to the back of the line.

We were so proud of our students who showed they were honest and not afraid to take risks!

02Earth Week in the Primary Department

Earth Week in the Primary Department was a time for students to learn about the environment and make a positive impact on the planet. Initiatives like Meatless Monday encouraged students to try plant-based foods and reduce their meat consumption, while Teach Outside Tuesday took lessons outdoors for nature walks and activities to promote nature appreciation.

Finally, the exciting event of “Swap-It Friday” encouraged students to bring in gently used items to swap, promoting the concept of reduce, reuse, and recycle. Through these activities, students gained a greater understanding of the environment and how to make sustainable choices.

What an awesome week in the PD!

03International Secondary Department Interact Club

The Interact Club, in cooperation with the Rotary Club, held an outreach program at Fu An Elementary School. Grade 11 students spent the day playing with and teaching students from Grades 1 to 6. The fun-filled day consisted of basic English language teaching, art making and educational play. This is the Interact Club's second visit to Fu An Elementary School this year as part of the club's commitment to do worthwhile and meaningful community service activities.

04Research & Inquiry Mini Exhibition was a Great Success

The Secondary Bilingual Department began to implement a new course called “Research and Inquiry” in the 2022-23 school year. Students from grade 7 to 10 learn how to do research on a certain topic.

This year, students started to explore the topic of plastic. A mini exhibition was held allowing students to present their research at the beginning of the semester.

We invited Professor Chien-Sen Liao from the Department of Biological Science & Technology of I-Shou University to provide constructive suggestions and feedback towards students’ projects. Every student tried hard to present their project and received  great feedback on how to conduct further research from professor Liao.

Looking forward to students’ final product at the end of this semester!

05International Students in the IB Program Take Chinese as a Second Language

The second language Chinese class is completely different from the Chinese class we are familiar with as a native language. In the 6th grade, international students are creating their own books. The theme for the third unit is "Food," and they select Chinese books related to their interests and language level. They learn how to summarize the story, and apply new vocabulary and sentence structures learned in this unit.
