義大焦點 IN FOCUS Week 11

01Primary Years Programme Exhibition (PYPx) Bilingual Book Drive - Sending Love to Lushan Elementary

The bilingual book drive project initiated by the “School Resources” PYPx group has come to a perfect ending this week!

This practical, knowledge-based action combined transdisciplinary learning, ATL Skills, the Learner Profile, and initiative. It was a significant action. Thank you to our entire I-Shou community for donations and dedication.

At this time, we’ve collected a total of 6,359 books which will soon be sent to Lushan Elementary in Nantou. Through this action we hope to help more young readers in remote rural areas of Taiwan to understand the world through reading, enrich their souls, and gain valuable knowledge for future development!

This PYPx action has been led by Grade 5 students Alfie, David, and Miki, guided by their mentors, Tr. Annie and Tr. Anita. Thank you!

02Middle School Students Highly Engaged in Science Experiments

Now that we have finished our mid-semester assessments, teachers and students are  engaging in quality learning experiences and students are beginning new units of inquiry as we enter quarter 4 in the “Year of Being Principled”.

This week Grade 6 Science students were highly engaged in DIY (Do it Yourself) experiments as they prepared for the Science Fair. The statement of inquiry for this unit is ‘Inquiry and Logical examination of evidence enhance understanding of scientific ideas”. The conceptual understanding is, “A science fair project is a science inquiry that uses the logical steps in the scientific method to examine evidence and to explore understanding.”  Both the statement of inquiry and the conceptual understanding guide students in their development of science fair experiments.

03International Secondary Department Week 11 - Well Done Grade 9-11 and Good Luck Grade 12 Grade Students

It has been a week of assessments this week in the ISD, with Grade 9 - 11 finishing their mid-semester assessments and the Grade 12 students finally starting their IB Diploma final exams. So far things have gone very well and students are clearly very determined to do their best. The study area on the 4th floor is a very quiet place! The Grade 12 students have almost a month of exams and it does make us reflect on the fact that approximately 60,000 students worldwide will sit these same exams on the same day on all continents! The IB Diploma is truly a world-wide qualification.

This week we also say goodbye and good luck to Ms. Winnie who leaves her role as ISD receptionist. We would like to thank her for the great work that she has done here over the past 18 months, and she will be missed by teachers and students alike.

Good luck in the future Ms. Winnie!

04Secondary Bilingual Department - National Book Report Contest - Excellence Award

"After you have read more than ten thousand volumes, you will find it easy to write as if God were there helping you."

Grade 11 Harry and Richard from the Secondary Bilingual Department attended MOE National Book Report Contest and received an award for excellence. Teacher Mandy was the supervising teacher who gave Harry and Richard a lot of support during the process. We are very proud of their achievement. SBD will continue to promote reading and encourage our students to participate in reading relevant contests.

Congratulations!
