義大焦點 IN FOCUS Week 10

01Early Success for I-Shou’s UK University Applicants

Congratulations to our ISD Grade 12 students who have recently received some fantastic offers from top UK (Russell Group) universities.

These include offers for Business at the University of Sheffield and Southampton University. Also, for Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Discovery at the University of Birmingham.

Well done Grade 12’s!

02Halloween at the I-Shou International Preschool (ISIP)

In the weeks leading up to Halloween Day on October 31st, the ISIP students and teachers were busy decorating the school and classrooms. The hallways looked spooky as students came to school on Monday dressed in some creative costumes. The day began with an assembly to announce the winners of Most Creative costumes in each class. The students then went trick-or-treating inside the ISIP.

In the afternoon students went to four different Halloween activities. There was a halloween dance station, a game of spooky chairs, a ghost throwing activity, and a creepy crawly tank filled with prizes.

The students and teachers had lots of fun and we know it was a special day for our students!

03Community Speakers in the Primary Department

In recent weeks, the Primary Department has welcomed numerous guest speakers from within our community. Each presentation topic connected to Units of Inquiry and offered students the opportunity to experience and discuss how their learning applies to the real world.

Grade 5 students invited a speaker into their class to share about children living with disabilities in Taiwan. They also participated in a virtual presentation about energy use and climate change.

Grade 1 students invited members of our own school community who are dentists to share the importance of dental health and hygiene.

04Do words have the power to make real change in the world?

That's the question that International Secondary Department Grade 10 English Language Acquisition students have been exploring over the last 8 weeks!

Students have identified and evaluated persuasive strategies in advertisements, videos and speeches. They've been inspired by the words of activists such as Malala Yousafzai, Greta Thunberg, and Martin Luther King Jr..

Finally, this week all of their practice and effort has paid off! Students performed passionate and inspiring speeches connected to our Global Context: Fairness and Development.

05First Robotics Competition (FRC) Team 9126 Silver Hawks Learn New Skills

After the recruitment sessions two weeks ago, Silver Hawks now have more team members. At the same time, this young team continues to equip themselves with new skills. The two coaches demonstrate to the rookies how to use the tools to measure, cut, and assemble.

Team 9126 is picking up the needed skills at a steady pace.

06The connection between Chinese reading and writing

This academic year, I-Shou Chinese emphasizes the connection between reading and writing, and a development of multimodality dialogue in class.

Here is the 5C classroom as Teacher Sally encourages students to develop their thinking and writing skills from reading while completing collaborative tasks through Padlet. Learning, cooperation, and publication serve to stabilize a favorable scaffold for language development.
