義大焦點 IN FOCUS Week 10

01Primary Department - Reading Month & Lushan Book Drive

We have a deep love of reading! As a community, we read in multiple languages everyday. Reading Month promotes this love of reading with many engaging events. We started the month with “Stop, Drop, and Read”, and we have had guest Literacy Lunchtime readers all month, both in-person and online.

Another very special component is our Book Drive for Lushan Elementary School. Not only do we promote reading at I-Shou, but we also care about ensuring students in rural schools have access to bilingual books. We are finishing the month asking our entire community to contribute books to our drive! Dir. Nick and Tr. Michael will drive the books to Nantou in May.

Thank you to Tr. Annie and Tr. Anita for organizing the Book Drive with their G5 PYPx Book Drive Leadership Team, David, Alfie, and Miki, who thought of this student-initiated action!

02Middle School Department Happy to Be Back to In-person Teaching and Learning

Adaptability and flexibility are two of the most in-demand soft skills in today’s ever-changing world. Our Middle School Department (MSD) students, teachers, parents, and administration have shown they are well-versed in this skill by seamlessly shifting to Distance Learning last week and back to in-person learning this week.

This week in MSD we began our Mid-semester assessments which we postponed a couple of days in order to give students and teachers time to get back into their daily routines at school after a week of distance learning. Mid-semester assessments are going well and students are very focused.

MSD students this week have also begun to prepare for the Science Fair, which is an annual culminating event that will come later in the school year.  Whether in-person or via distance learning, the MSD is excelling at teaching and learning at I-Shou International School!

03International Secondary Department - Week 10: Mid-semester Assessments

The students returned to the ISD in-person learning this week with genuine enthusiasm and energy following a really successful week of distance learning. They have taken this level of positivity into their mid-semester assessments and so far throughout the campus, there is a feeling of quiet positivity.

For the Grade 12 students who continue to receive excellent university offers (add Boston University to that ever growing list) this is their final formal week of lessons before their IB Diploma examinations begin next week. They too have been very positive as they can see the start to the end of their final two years in the school.

Good luck to all students completing assessments this week, next week, and beyond!

04Secondary Bilingual Department - 2022 National Inquiry and Practice Competition: Excellence Award

The 2022 National Inquiry and Practice Competition allows all Taiwan’s senior high school students to show their efforts in “Inquiry and Practice” in different subjects. There are only 60 works selected as excellence awards in each competition.

Secondary Bilingual Department (SBD) grade 11 students won the excellence award with their work on “Milk Plastic and Puzzles”. Students also used their Approaches to Learning (ATL) learning skills such as thinking, research, and communication skills throughout the competition.

They will share their wonderful results at the online annual meeting held on April 23, 2022!

05Laser Cutters

The Maker and Design Imaginarium recently acquired a BeamboxPro Laser Cutter. Some keen students and teachers have already started to use this tool to create fantastic designs.
