義大焦點 IN FOCUS WEEK 12

01Celebrating Bilingualism in the Primary Years Programme (PYP)

Bilingual Learning is one of our guiding statements at I-Shou and central to what we do in the Primary Department. The PYP is a special place, where our co-teaching model brings native speakers of both English and Chinese to our students to learn across all subjects bilingually. Not only are our students becoming bilingual, they are also becoming biliterate and increasing their skills across their listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Being bilingual also means having an open mind, and fostering international-mindedness which are key to success in an increasingly global world.

02Middle School Grade 8 Students Working Hard on Aptitude Test

This week in the Middle School Department (MSD) Grade 8 students took an annual aptitude test. The test is important for measuring student capabilities in order to predict future potential. Our holistic educational model meets students in their Zone of Proximal Development, differentiating learning in a student-centered and inquiry-based approach.

The Zone of Proximal development is a seminal educational theory developed by Russian Psychologist Lev Vygotsky in the early 1900’s which builds off of the work of another influential educational theorist, Jean Piaget.  Both theorists maintain that students learn best in student-centered learning environments as in I-Shou International School. This is in keeping with our school vision: “Making the world a better place, one student at a time.”

Inquiry-based, student-centered learning is at the heart of teaching and learning in the Middle Years Programme (MYP) at I-Shou. Assessing each of our unique and diverse student’s capabilities is vital for their future success in an inclusive and internationally-minded school.

03Week 12 in the International Secondary Department (ISD)

What a wonderful week in the ISD!

We began the week celebrating with the Ultimate Frisbee team who placed 1st in the Taiwan International Schools Sports Association tournament. Throughout the week our G12 English B students have been completing their International Diploma speaking assessments with the excellent support of their teachers. We have also had our student leadership/ Global Issues Network fundraising for a local community project through the International Day of Tolerance. These are just three of the many highlights and events that took place in a busy but standard week in the ISD.

Well done to all involved!

04Who is the Winner? Secondary Bilingual Department 9R Creative Robot Challenge Competition

Robots play an important role in our daily life. With the development of artificial intelligence (AI), robots assist humans with various services nowadays. Not only is the “Sweeping Robot” common in our lives but the “Detecting Robot” can also help humans to explore outer space. They all represent that artificial intelligence (AI) is booming now!

Secondary Bilingual Department 9R students use our new Maker Space to make their unique robots and compete with classmates. In this class, the teacher uses the IB Approaches to Learning Skill: Creative thinking and allows every student to think innovatively to implement our teaching goal- Learning by Doing.

Let’s guess who is the winner?
