Our guiding STATEMENTS
Accreditation
I-Shou International School is accredited with the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the Taiwan Ministry of Education. Ongoing school improvement is critical to the delivery of quality education, and the support and guidance provided by these organisations ensures improvements measured by our students’ successes. I-Shou is committed to continuous school improvement aligned with the accreditation process.
Bilingual Learning
I-Shou International School is a bilingual community. We believe that additive bilingualism is best practice, that language is fundamental to learning, thinking and communicating, across the whole curriculum. We emphasise that it is necessary not only to learn language, but also learn about language and through language, in authentic contexts. The strands of oral, written, and visual communication are learned across all subject areas. Language learning plays a major role in our school, and the development of mother tongue language is crucial for cognitive development and maintaining cultural identity.
Boarding House
I-Shou International School provides a co-educational residential community where students feel safe and secure. By giving students appropriately increasing responsibilities, and by providing forums for meaningful communication, the school creates opportunities for personal growth and a sense of belonging.
Child Protection and Safeguarding
I-Shou International School, as our highest priority, commits to supporting a school environment that safeguards children through both prevention and intervention. Safeguarding and promoting the physical, social and emotional well-being of I-Shou children is the responsibility of everyone who comes in contact with our children and families. All members of the school community and visitors are required to respect, understand, commit, and comply with our established I-Shou Child Protection and Safeguarding Policies and Procedures.
Curriculum
I-Shou International School is authorised by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB) to teach the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP) and by the Taiwan MOE to teach the National Curriculum. The PYP is taught from K to 5, the MYP from 6 to 10, and the DP 11 and 12, additionally the National Curriculum is taught from 9 to 12. The IB curriculum provides pedagogical frameworks for inquiry-based learning with content aligned with Taiwan Ministry of Education requirements. Throughout all programmes, teachers support students with the development of their skills associated with the core of each programme, which include service and approaches to learning.
Integration of Technology and Maker Thinking
I-Shou International School embraces and integrates technology and maker thinking into teaching and learning practices. Teachers are assisted through responsive technology and maker support, and ongoing professional development. Our school community values a culture of creative expertise that enhances inquiry-based learning and develops a mindset in students that seeks to overcome challenges, fosters inventive thinking, and supports collaboration and risk-taking. Practices and expectations for the use of technology by all members of the school community are aligned with international standards.
International-Mindedness
I-Shou International School promotes the attitudes and values associated with international mindedness, which influences the actions of the school community. These attitudes and values are expressed through our professional and social relationships, academic curriculum, service learning, leadership opportunities, network connections, sports, the arts and other activities. The I-Shou International School community supports the development of our students into young adults that embody international mindedness, demonstrated through their culturally sensitive and globally competent behaviours.
Learner Profile Attributes
I-Shou International School teachers support the personal and academic growth of our students by developing and modelling the skills related to each attribute. The Learner Profile attributes are at the core of all programmes and are the key to developing internationally minded students. With our guidance, our students become inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective.
Professional Development
I-Shou International School is a community of learners, and this is reflected in our approach to professional growth. Teachers set individualized professional goals, to reflect on their teaching and learning outcomes, and to consider options for development. Working collaboratively with programme coordinators and school administration, the school aims to arrange professional development options for teachers. These options include in-school, online and regional workshops, and opportunities for collaborative sharing with colleagues.
Teaching and Learning
I-Shou International school is a community of learners, and this is reflected in our approach to teaching. Teachers support and use a constructivist and collaborative approach to inquiry-based teaching and learning. We believe that all students have the capacity for personal and academic growth, and that a positive and reflective approach towards student learning behaviours brings the best outcomes. We organise teaching according to International Baccalaureate standards and practices, share understandings and work together in a collegial manner.
